How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Session: A Checklist

## The Night Before Your Session ### Sleep well Your body heals faster when it's rested. Get 7-8 hours. A fresh body handles pain better and recovers quicker. ### Hydrate Start drinking extra water the day before. Well-hydrated skin holds ink better, bleeds less, heals faster. Your skin should be moisturized from the inside out. ### Eat a real meal Come fed. Do not show up to your appointment on an empty stomach. A proper meal 1-2 hours before gives you the energy to sit through without getting lightheaded. ### Pick your outfit right Your clothes need to make it easy to access the tattoo area without awkwardness. Examples: arm tattoo: short-sleeve shirt or something easy to roll up. Leg tattoo: loose shorts or sweatpants. Rib or back: a one-piece top, not something you have to pull over your head. ## Day of Your Session ### Arrive early Don't rush in stressed. Get there 5-10 minutes before your appointment so you can settle in, review any last details with your artist, and get mentally prepared. ### Bring a bag Sessions run longer than you think. Pack a water bottle, snacks or a light meal, headphones or your phone with music or podcasts, and a book or journal to keep you occupied during longer sessions. ### Skip the alcohol and caffeine No alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment — it thins blood, causes more bleeding, and makes tattooing harder. Limit caffeine too. Too much makes you jittery and sensitive. ### Pain management Most artists won't use numbing creams — they alter skin texture and affect ink uptake. If you're very anxious, some artists recommend Benadryl or a similar antihistamine. Always check with your artist first. ## Mental Prep ### Look at your design again Review the reference images and agreed-upon design one more time. You want to walk into the chair knowing exactly what's happening. ### Tell your artist how you handle pain If you've had a lot of pain in other tattoos, if certain areas scare you, or if you tend to get lightheaded — say something. A good artist will adjust their pace, take breaks, or slow down in sensitive areas. ### Plan for breaks For sessions over 3 hours, plan on 10-15 minute breaks every hour. Your skin recovers and so do you. Don't assume sitting still for four hours straight is normal — it's not. ## What Not to Do Before Your Tattoo Don't go in hungover. Alcohol thins your blood, makes you more sensitive to pain, slows healing. If you drank the night before — reschedule. Better a rescheduled tattoo than a bad one. Don't skip meals. Eating before is critical. Low blood sugar causes fainting, which is unsafe and messy. Don't wear perfume or heavy cologne. Some people in your studio are sensitive to strong scents. Keep it minimal. Don't pick at healing tattoos nearby. If you have a healing tattoo in the area, leave it alone. ## After Your Session Preparation continues after the tattoo is finished. Listen to your artist's aftercare instructions. Take clear photos of the fresh tattoo for reference and healing tracking. Start aftercare immediately — wash, moisturize, protect from sun. Book touch-ups while the tattoo is still fresh if needed. ## Quick Reference Before your session: sleep 7-8 hours, hydrate the day before, eat a full meal, no alcohol 24 hours before, pick an accessible outfit. During your session: arrive 5-10 minutes early, bring water and snacks, tell your artist about pain comfort level, plan breaks every hour for sessions over 3 hours. After your session: follow aftercare instructions, photograph the fresh tattoo, start aftercare immediately, protect from sun, book touch-ups if needed. ## Book Your Session If you're in Somerset, KY or nearby, book through Level 2 and tell me about your tattoo idea — we'll nail down the details, schedule a session date, and get you prepared.
