Your First Tattoo — A Complete Guide
Getting your first tattoo is a milestone. Whether you've been planning it for years or the idea just clicked, here's everything you need to know to make it a great experience.
Before Your Appointment
Choosing an Artist
This is the most important decision. Look for:
- •A portfolio that matches your vision — not just "good work," but work in the style you want
- •Cleanliness and professionalism — a proper studio environment matters
- •Communication — your artist should listen, ask questions, and collaborate with you
Placement & Size
Your artist will help with this, but consider:
- •First tattoos on the inner forearm, upper arm, or thigh tend to be relatively manageable pain-wise
- •Start with a size that feels right — you can always add more later
- •Think about visibility for work or personal reasons
Day-Of Preparation
- •Eat a full meal before your appointment — low blood sugar can make you lightheaded
- •Hydrate well for 24-48 hours beforehand
- •Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours — it thins the blood
- •Wear comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the tattoo area
- •Bring entertainment — headphones, a book, or a friend for longer sessions
During Your Session
The Pain Factor
Let's be real: it's not painless. But it's also not as bad as most people imagine. The sensation is more of a scratching/vibrating feeling than sharp pain. Areas closer to bone tend to be more sensitive.
How Long Will It Take?
This varies wildly by design:
- •Small minimalist pieces: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- •Medium detailed work: 2-4 hours
- •Large or complex pieces: multiple sessions
Aftercare
Proper aftercare is crucial for a great-looking tattoo:
- 1.Leave the bandage on for the time your artist recommends
- 2.Wash gently with unscented soap
- 3.Apply a thin layer of recommended ointment
- 4.Keep it out of direct sunlight during healing
- 5.Don't pick, scratch, or submerge in water
